This Skill addresses the issue of AI executing commands or offering unsolicited suggestions during brainstorming sessions. In practice, when you need to freely explore ideas, untangle complex problems, or engage in open-ended discussion, the AI often can't resist executing code, editing files, or proactively recommending next steps, disrupting the flow of thought. pi-brainstorm enforces a read-only mode, restricting the AI to using only the read tool, keeping the conversation purely exploratory, and automatically generating a structured decision brief at the end.
Usage is simple: just type /brainstorm in Pi to enter brainstorming mode. The AI will display a visible prompt indicating it's in read-only state. You can freely ask questions, discuss, and analyze; the AI will not execute any shell commands or modify files. Typing /brainstorm again brings up a menu with three options: Continue, Finish and Summarize, or Cancel and Exit. You can also directly say /brainstorm finish to quickly end the session. The AI will then collect the conversation content, call the current model (or a dedicated summary model you've configured) to generate a decision brief, and open an editor for you to make adjustments. The brief can be exported as a Markdown file or used to replace the current conversation context.
It's ideal for teams or individuals who frequently engage in open discussions, technical research, or requirement analysis. Product managers planning new features, project managers breaking down tasks, or academic researchers exploring emerging fields can all use this mode to avoid excessive AI intervention and focus on the thinking process itself. The generated decision brief can be directly used for meeting minutes or project documentation, boosting work efficiency.
It's recommended to define a clear topic before each brainstorming session so the AI can generate a more accurate brief title. Note that it primarily relies on the Pi platform and requires the extension to be installed. If you wish to use a dedicated summary model, you can set it via the /brainstorm-summary-model command, e.g., /brainstorm-summary-model google/gemini-2.5-flash. Also, briefs are saved by default in the brainstorms/ directory, so ensure this directory exists or you have write permissions.
Key Features
Unlike standard chat modes, `pi-brainstorm` enforces read-only operation, preventing the AI from performing any write actions or making proactive suggestions, and automatically generates a structured decision brief. Other AI tools often fail to distinguish between the exploration and execution phases within a conversation, which can easily interrupt the thought process.
Limitations
Requires a Pi environment (version ≥1.0) and only supports the `read` tool; it cannot execute any code, edit files, or run shell commands while in brainstorming mode. Brief generation depends on model availability; if the model is unavailable, it falls back to a plain text transcript.
FAQ
How do I exit brainstorming mode?
Type `/brainstorm` to open the menu and select 'Cancel and discard' to exit immediately; or type `/brainstorm cancel` to exit without generating a summary.
How do I configure a dedicated summary model?
Type `/brainstorm-summary-model model_identifier`, for example, `/brainstorm-summary-model google/gemini-2.5-flash`. Type `/brainstorm-summary-model clear` to clear the setting.
